Abraham Kriel Childcare is one
of South Africa's oldest and most respected childcare organisations.
With 106 years of experience in childcare, the organisation takes
the lead in numerous new developments. Therapeutic services have
long been standard practice. This has now been expanded first
by opening specialist houses for children with complex trauma
and others with special needs and most recently with the opening
of an 'Impact School' in an effort to ensure the healing and
development of damaged children in an unthreatening environment. |

Dance for a Cure is a volunteer
based organisation committed to fighting the battle against Cervical
Cancer in South Africa. We raise money through the art form of
Dance and use the funds raised to vaccinate girls against cervical
cancer in the areas where there is no awareness of the disease
and where the vaccine is unaffordable and the risk probably the
greatest. We have run several vaccination programmes, but there
are so many girls to reach. Every woman is at risk, no matter
her age or her family history and therefore every woman should
be vaccinated. We believe that through awareness, education and
prevention we can make a significant difference. Cervical cancer
is the most common cause of cancer death in woman in South Africa! |

The Durban Children's Home is a Non-Government Organisation, established in 1905 to provide substitute care to orphans, destitute children and children with parents who were unable to care for them.
In the past, the organisation provided custodial care to these children. When this method of child care became outdated, the organisation adjusted its programme to ensure that children, youth and their families receive an effective, efficient and relevant service. We recognise the importance of early intervention, preventative work with children, youth and families, as well as family reunification.

GlenBridge Special School, a government school catering for children with special needs (eg. Down Syndrome, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, and other conditions of mental handicap). GlenBridge Special School provides the learners with various academic, music and sporting programs, as well as occupational therapy on a limited scale. GlenBridge is unable to provide the much-needed prerequisites of physiotherapy and speech therapy. Teaching equipment needs to be updated. Our building and its surrounds require regular maintenance. Our school buses are sorely in need of being upgraded, bearing in mind that the safety of our special kids is a priority. Each class needs to be relatively small, with the teacher requiring full-time assistance to ensure that the children are constantly monitored. Many of our children are compromised to the extent of requiring medication, whether it be for seizures or other neurodevelopmental complications. There are some children with hearing difficulty and various other physical disability.

The
Masihlule Project was born out of a concern for
poor people who scavenge through wealthier households rubbish
bags that are put on the streets outside their houses for
collection by the local Municipality. The project is based
at the Municipal Landfill site in Grahamstown, South Africa
and started with 4 Sorters in 2008. This figure is growing
with the project aiming to take unemployed people who are
scavenging on the Landfill site and giving them an opportunity
to create a consistent income through recycling waste.
The Sorters collect glass, metal, card, paper and plastic
and these items are weighed. They are paid according to
the weight of the materials they have collected or processed. They
crush the glass, bale the cardboard and paper and shred
the plastic in big machines. These items are then
sold to businesses for use in manufacturing. The project
has grown considerably since inception and there are now
19 sorters collecting and processing recyclables at the
Landfill site. Collaboration and support from our
partners has allowed the project to purchase machinery
and to build storage facilities. With sustainability crucial,
the aim is that the project people form a co-operative
which will eventually take over the running of a viable
business. |

Since we're a 'home for life', it's important that our residents maintain a balanced lifestyle. This means providing employment in sheltered circumstances, i.e. much guidance, ongoing training, sustained supervision, among equals, without emphasis on competition or production. We are particularly proud of the quality of our work. We also provide full-care and therapy such as sport, self-help, worship and occupation of free-time. Through these activities an environment is created in which the intellectually disabled person can feel happy, safe and secure. |

In order for the world to come together to defeat
challenges in our communities – e.g. aids, poverty, crime,
abuse – there is a need for a renewed effort that will
involve all elements of society nationally but most importantly
at community level. The vision of Word in Action Ministries is
to stimulate communities, government and ordinary people to take
full responsibility and accountability for ourselves as nation
and what has been given to us, until this world becomes a better
place for us and the generation to come. |
