Children of Light comprises a group of patriotic, committed young people united by the desire to make a difference in our community. We seek to address the national challenge of poverty using an holistic approach that includes literacy, up skilling and nutrition. Soup kitchens and food parcels, when implemented in isolation, only result in culture of apathy and dependency. This we believe is a self-defeating cycle.

Born out of a concern for
poor people who scavenge through wealthier households rubbish
bags, The
Masihlule Project is based
at the Municipal Landfill site in Grahamstown. The aim is to take unemployed people who are
scavenging on the Landfill site and give them an opportunity
to create a consistent income through recycling waste.
The Sorters collect glass, metal, card, paper and plastic. They
crush the glass, bale the cardboard and paper and shred
the plastic in big machines for resale to recycling businesses. The project
has grown considerably since inception and there are now
19 sorters collecting and processing recyclables. Collaboration and support from our
partners has allowed the project to purchase machinery
and to build storage facilities. The ultimate aim is for these people to form a co-operative
and take over the running of a viable
business. |
