Community Upliftment/Development

 


The main objectives of 1000 Hills Community Helpers are to provide a community service to the 1000 Hills Community regarding STD/HIV/AIDS and other related diseases and their conditions; to help the community run a feeding scheme, day care and after care centre; to improve the quality of life of the elderly, babies and young children and to establish workshops for the education of HIV/AIDS, dehydration, breastfeeding, hygiene and baby nutrition.

The organisation's secondary objectives will be to work in collaboration with other organizations that mainly deal with health, nutrition and education.


Amathuba Community Upliftment Project co-ordinates and manages grassroots projects, creating opportunities for unemployed youth, men and women to learn new skills and empower themselves. Amathuba is based in Embo, near Hillcrest, where it has built a number of homes providing on the job training for community members.

 

Bodies in Unity is dedicated to sport development in Swaneville. The organisation runs a sports club for less priviliged children, where they can participate in soccer, rugby, netball and volleyball. The organisation is in urgent need of equipment, training skills and programmes.

Catholic Welfare & Development is a leading, dynamic organisation professionaly enhancing self-reliant communities in the Western Cape.

Our vision is to fight poverty through education by helping leaners who are doing Mathematics and Physics to improve their results so that they increase their opportunities to access tertiary education. Children's Happy Home runs Maths and Physics classes on Saturdays at Zola Business School in Khayelitsha. We also have an Eye Care project to help those pupils who cannot see the board by screening and testing their eyes and donate spectacles to those that are severely affected.

Children of Light comprises a group of patriotic, committed young people united by the desire to make a difference in our community. We seek to address the national challenge of poverty using an holistic approach that includes literacy, up skilling and nutrition. Soup kitchens and food parcels, when implemented in isolation, only result in culture of apathy and dependency. This we believe is a self-defeating cycle.

The David Rattray Foundation exists to further the cause of reconciliation between the peoples of South Africa by promoting discussion through historical and political lectures, nationally and internationally, and to raise funds through these and by any other appropriate means, for locally-based upliftment projects specifically in the areas of education and health in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

A Friend In Need

At A Friend In Need we have a feeding scheme where we hand out food parcels to app 200 families every Monday morning. We also have 5 disabled children we support on a weekly basis with whatever they need and we have a library for the old people and children to do their homework on a daily basis. We need food for the food parcels on a regular basis to make sure the food parcels are sufficient to last for a week. We have started a sport acadamy in Swaneville near Krugersdorp to educate and keep children off the streets. We have volleyball, netball, soccer, rugby and athletics. We are starting from scratch and any help what so - ever will be highly appreciated.

Future Visions contributes meaningfully to youth and women empowerment in order to capacitate them to envision the future. We invest in community based projects to empower the community especially the youth and women to give them skills and knowledge to invest in a positive future.

 


Green Communities. Sustainable community projects focusing on: greening, food security, job creation, social development, skills development and training, economic improvement

 


HOPE Africa is the social development programme of the Anglican Church. Our vision is to build the capacity of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa by facilitating effective development through partnerships.

 


Since 2004 Hope House has provided general community counselling to families and individuals, trained lay counsellors and volunteers, put addicts on the road to recovery and provided learners, youth and educators in vulnerable schools with much-needed life skills education. More recently we implemented a perinatal mental health screening and counselling service at two community maternity clinics.

 


Based in Durban North and arising from the Church of the Good Shepherd, Indlela serves as a covering body for four projects (Fair Havens Babies Transition Home, Life Skills/HIV Prevention Programme, Door of Hope Counselling Centre and the Feeding Programme) which have a proven track record and share a common purpose: supporting those in need in the North Durban Community.

 


Our passion is for the people of Mpumuza, who we desperately want to see empowered and upskilled. We are particularly passionate about the next generation - the children and the youth. We believe that new hope for this community will come through education upliftment and Christian mentoring.

 


Light of Hope

Light of Hope A 'Light of Hope' to people facing darkenss. 

The Luxolo Home-Based Community Care Centre is situated in the Mzomomhle Informal Settlement, Gonubie. It provides care and support to people suffering from AIDS/HIV. There is a creche at the centre for toddlers and a pre-school for children up to the age of six. The children are from the nearby shacks. A daily meal is provided to the children. The project is run by a group of women under the leadership of a retired teacher.

MaAfrika Tikkun is a registered Non-Governmental and Public Benefit Organisation that is focused on the sustainable transformation of communities. With Nelson Mandela as our patron-in-chief, MaAfrika Tikkun's goal is to nurture children and youth from 0-19 years of age, empowering them to develop into valuable, contributing members of society.

Born out of a concern for poor people who scavenge through wealthier households rubbish bags, The Masihlule Project is based at the Municipal Landfill site in Grahamstown. The aim is to take unemployed people who are scavenging on the Landfill site and give them an opportunity to create a consistent income through recycling waste. The Sorters collect glass, metal, card, paper and plastic.  They crush the glass, bale the cardboard and paper and shred the plastic in big machines for resale to recycling businesses. The project has grown considerably since inception and there are now 19 sorters collecting and processing recyclables.  Collaboration and support from our partners has allowed the project to purchase machinery and to build storage facilities. The ultimate aim is for these people to form a co-operative and take over the running of a viable business.

Missionvale Care Centre offers a holistic service to the impoverished community of Missionvale. Our services include Nutrition, Aids Counseling, Basic Medical Care, Education and Skills Development. 

The vision of the Ncumanathi (Smile with us) Foundation is to encourage South African children to appreciate art, culture and heritage and participate in community development. Our aim is to educate and heal our Nation through skills development and training about Arts, culture and Heritage, through the use of music workshop, music therapy and print making.


New Chapter Foundation was founded in March 2011 and serves communities across Cape Town, South Africa. Nokuphila Community Services

Nokuphila Community Services is a non-profit organization that provides Care and Support services to people living with HIV/AIDS, orphans and vulnerable children in and around Springs in the East of Johannesburg.

The organisation runs an Early Childhood Development & Learning Centre, Poverty Alleviation programs, provides Psychosocial Support to the affected and infected and runs a Drop-In Centre among other things –- which caters mainly for primary school children, ensuring they get a nutritious breakfast delivered to their schools on a daily basis, a balanced meal for lunch and assistance with homework. We are about to launch a computer centre to ensure that these underprivileged children get an opportunity to be exposed to computers early in life and that they can fairly compete with other more privileged children.

The Goedgedacht Trust runs the Path Out of Poverty (POP) rural-community development programme from Goedgedacht Olive Farm in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, helping impoverished children break free from the damaging cycles of poverty that have trapped their families for generations.

We plant olive trees on the farm from donations. Each olive tree planted puts one more rural child onto the Path out of Poverty programme to a brighter and greener future! We stick with our children from newborn until they are self-sufficient young adults. Our 3 golden keys are Education, Health and Personal Development.


Philimpilo means ‘live life’. We are an NGO that aims to breathe life and hope into communities through psychosocial (i.e. psychological, social and spiritual) care.

Philimpilo Community Care is a response to the need for holistic HIV interventions in vulnerable communities. In partnership with local churches, Philimpilo develops church-based counselling centres in underprivileged areas, aimed at offering free, easily accessible and high quality services in partnership with professionals, community service providers, and businesses.

Sonke's vision is a world in which men, women and children can enjoy equitable, healthy and happy relationships that contribute to the development of just and democratic societies.

Thandanani Children's Foundation provides care and support for orphans and other vulnerable children (particularly those affected and infected by HIV/Aids) in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

We have a well-established system of volunteer driven community based carers who work with our staff to identify and respond to the basic material, physical, cognitive and emotional needs of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) within their communities.

Homebased Care

Our vision is a community that is HIV/AIDS free and see to it that those who are already infected and affected are taken care of and they recieve appropriate support from family, community, friends and other person closely related to them.

We provide homebased care to those living with illness and assist in refering those with communicable diseases (e.g. TB) to the clinic for further management and promote healthy lifestyles, life skills and also give support to orphans and vulnerable children.

Vukukhanye is a Public Benefit Organisation concerned with the support and upliftment of vulnerable and underprivileged individuals and families in Chesterville, Cato Manor, KwaZulu-Natal. Vukukhanye was formed in October 2001 in response to the serious threat to child and family welfare caused by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Our primary focus was the care of orphans and vulnerable children, primarily through a Children's Transition/Foster Home. Since 2005 Vukukhanye's objectives have included a broader range of activities, including HIV/AIDS prevention and training; Early Childhood Development; Youth and Adult Education & Development (including after school sport, bursaries and a school partnership project) and community welfare support.

WHEAT Women's Fund is a national organisation that assists grassroots women by issuing grants for training and capacity building. The organisation promotes a culture of giving to strengthen their work: developing grassroots women's leadership to achieve social, economic and gender justice. WHEAT Women's Fund envisages a Southern Africa where all women enjoy their human rights and have access to education, training and sustainable incomes, made possible by promoting a culture of giving.
